CfBT Spotlight:

Asa

on mentoring three Bruneian English teachers

Asa’s insights on mentoring three Bruneian teachers

Asa has been teaching for about 25 years and has spent two separate stints in Brunei, totalling 10 years. He was involved in the LNCP programme as a coach in 2019. Currently, he is thriving in his school and actively participating in CfBT’s ongoing coaching programme.

Despite his extensive experience in coaching, he initially felt nervous about mentoring, as it is quite different from coaching. However, his perspective immediately changed as he embraced vulnerability – openly sharing his teaching strategies with the teachers he mentors and being receptive to constructive feedback. Through meaningful mentoring, Asa has played a key role in developing the capacity of Bruneian teachers.

In this video, Asa shares his experience as a mentor and reflects on how it has positively impacted not only the teachers he mentors but also the wider school community.

How Asa inspired three Bruneian teachers

In addition to Asa, the Bruneian teachers – Izzati, Alina, and Fazilah – also share their thoughts and experiences of being mentored by Asa since February this year. They are also currently pursuing their MTeach at UBD.

They reflect on their initial reactions to being mentored, the personal and professional growth they’ve experienced, and the memorable moments that shaped their journey. Being mentored by Asa who has rich international experience freshens up their perspectives on teaching. They also share how this process has transformed their roles within the school and what they’ve learned about themselves along the way.
