IELTS Introduction

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one the world’s most popular The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. It uses a nine-band scale to clearly identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9).

IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training

IELTS is available in: Academic – for people applying for higher education or professional registration, and General Training for those migrating to Australia, Canada and the UK, or applying for secondary education, training programmes and work experience in an English-speaking environment. Both versions provide a valid and accurate assessment of the four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

What is The Difference Between Paper-Based IELTS and Computer-Delivered IELTS?

If you choose computer-delivered IELTS, you will take the Listening, Reading and Writing sections on a computer. The Speaking test will remain face-to-face with a certified IELTS examiner.

All other aspects of the test are exactly the same, whether it is taken on paper or computer, including:

  • Price
  • Content
  • Timing
  • Question types
  • Scoring
  • Speaking test delivery
  • Test Report Form
  • Results Verification

One Skill Retake (OSR)

What is IELTS One Skill Retake, and how does it work?
IELTS One Skill Retake is a new feature designed to help you get your desired test score without retaking the full test. If you want to improve your score on one test skill, you can retake any of the four IELTS skills – Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking.
IELTS One Skill Retake is available for

    • IELTS Academic and General Training on computer
    • IELTS for UKVI (Academic and General Training)

Benefits of taking IELTS One Skill Retake
Focus on one skill: If you didn’t do your best in the first test, One Skill Retake gives you a second chance to show your English level and improve your score in one section without having to retake the full test. Save time and money by only doing the part of the test related to one skill rather than testing all four skills again.

Take a test you know:
IELTS One Skill Retake follows the same format and timing as the regular IELTS test. This means you will already be familiar with the test. You don’t need to worry about preparing for a new exam and learning different task types.

Receive a new Test Report Form:
You will receive a new IELTS Test Report Form with your IELTS One Skill Retake score. It also includes the scores from your original test and an overall CEFR score. Your results will be valid for two years from the original test date, which you can find on your Test Report Form.

Your original test scores will remain the same:
There will be no change to your other scores from your original test. And once you’ve received your results, if you would prefer to use your original score, you can.

Conditions to book IELTS One Skill Retake

    • You can book the test through the Test Taker Portal if you’ve recently completed a full IELTS on computer test.
    • You must also have received your results from a test centre that offers IELTS One Skill Retake.
    • You can only retake one skill once per original test, and you must sit the One Skill Retake within 60 days of your original test.

Enquiry on Results

If you did not receive the score you expected, you can apply for your test to be re-marked. This is called an Enquiry on Results (EOR). You can choose which test sections you want to be re-marked and will need to request this at the test centre where you sat the test.

The fee for this service is B$190.00 (Academic and General Training IELTS), which will be refunded if your score is increased for any section of the test. You need to apply for a re-marking no later than six weeks after the test date.

Download the Enquiry on Results Form and submit it to the test centre where you sat the test. Make sure you attach your Test Report Form and proof of payment. Enquiries can take up 2 to 3 weeks to complete.

Cancelling your IELTS Test

If you cancel your IELTS test no less than five weeks before the test date, you will receive a refund minus an administration fee of 25% of the test fee. Please note that refunds can take four to six weeks to process. To cancel your test date, please send your request via email exams@cfbt.org.

If an original medical certificate confirming illness on the date of the test is provided within five working days of the test date, together with the Request for Refund or Test Date Transfer Form, the fee is refundable, minus an administration fee of 25% of the test fee.

Only original medical certificates in English are accepted. If we have not received both required documents at our Napier office by the fifth working day after the test, you will be marked as absent and forfeit all claims.

Please note that we do not accept sick notes issued by family members.

Transfer of Test Date

Candidates may request for test day transfer, but this must be made in writing no later than five weeks before the scheduled test date. This also applies to registrations made within 5 weeks of the test date.

A fee of B$88.00 will be charged for this service. Please note that the new test date must be within three months of the original date. In cases of illness, transfer is possible within five weeks of the test if an original medical certificate is provided within five working days of the test date, together with the Request for Refund or Test Date Transfer Form.

If you receive a transfer to a new test date (either before the test or due to illness) and are ill on the second test date, then you are not entitled to a refund of the test fee nor to any further transfer to a new test date.

How can I get additional copies of my Test Report
Form sent to institutions?

Most institutions you’re applying to will need original copies of your IELTS Test Report Form, meaning photocopies will not be accepted. However, if you have taken IELTS Online, you can print out your eTRF or send it via email.

We can send up to five additional copies of your Test Report Form directly to the institutions you are applying to (e.g. universities, companies, immigration offices, etc). If you would like us to do this, please include the relevant addresses on the Test Taker Portal within two years of taking the test.

While paper versions remain the norm, some universities and institutions have now subscribed to the electronic download of IELTS scores. Please check with your local test centre before sending a hard copy of your results or asking us to do so.
